Preparing for Baby: What Items You Really Need
Any parent will tell you that the lead-up to having your first baby is both a wonderful and a scary time. While the prospect of being a new parent is nerve-wracking enough, there is so much extra effort that must go into planning for the baby’s arrival. With information coming at you from all sides, it can be hard to know what advice is useful and what is just noise. Here we’ll examine what items you really need to prepare for a baby.
Diapers and Wipes
You are going to need diapers, and you are going to need a lot of them. As arguably one of the most important things to make sure you have before the baby arrives, diapers are best to buy in bulk if you can find them. Along with lots of diapers, you’re also going to need a lot of baby wipes, which you can similarly buy in bulk. Make sure to check the ingredient list of any wipes you consider so that you can make informed decisions about what brand you’ll use.
You can’t swaddle your baby a blanket forever, so you’ll need to make sure they have clothes to wear—and not just any clothes, either. Unfortunately, your baby will grow faster than you want them to, so it pays to buy baby clothes larger than your baby’s current size so that you can get more use out of them. Don’t fall into the trap of buying something they’ll only wear once or twice.
Whether you keep the baby in your room for a while or have set up a space for them already, they’ll definitely need a place to sleep. You may want to keep your baby closer to you during the first few weeks, and that’s fine, but eventually, they will need their own crib and room, so it pays to do this early.
Given that you’ll need one of these to leave the hospital, it’s best to get this as soon as possible. Be very sure that you’ve installed it in your car correctly. It is likely that a staff member of the hospital will check it for the correct positioning before they discharge you and the baby.
You’ll first need to decide whether you’re breastfeeding or using formula. Once you make this decision, you’ll want to either have the equipment necessary for breast pumping or a stock of the formula that you are planning to use. In either case, you’ll want to have a good stock of bottles ready for them as well.
