Tips for Navigating a Thrift Store

Tips for Navigating a Thrift Store
Never been inside a thrift store before? When it’s time to get what you need, here are a few tips for keeping you oriented among the aisles and deals.

Thrift stores can seem a bit overwhelming if you’re not used to being inside of them. Racks upon racks of clothes and multitudes of shelves lined with housewares and home decor make for a confusing space if you’re new to the scene. Take comfort in the fact that you aren’t the first to be overwhelmed by thrift store shelves. 2nd Avenue wants you to feel comfortable at our stores, so we’ve come up with a few tips for navigating a thrift store that should help you out.

Plan Your Time of Arrival

If you don’t want to be caught in the glut of people that flood thrift stores across the country each weekend, you’ll want to be a little more careful with when you plan on coming in. Going thrifting might seem like a leisurely weekend activity, but you’re probably better off going on a weekday if you’re still getting used to the experience. The crowds will be smaller, and you’ll have much more room and time to examine the things you actually want.

Give Yourself a Goal

One of the best tips for navigating a thrift store is to come in with a plan of attack. There’s nothing wrong with coming in just to browse, but you’ll have an easier time navigating the store if you know what you’re looking for. A goal will allow you to block out the distractions of everything going on around you so you can just focus on finding that one specific thing.

Ask for Assistance

Our staff love to help those who are new to the thrifting scene. If you ever find yourself lost or unsure of where something is, know that you can always ask for help. We’ll be glad to point you in the right direction or help you find what you’re looking for. Some people worry that they’ll bother employees by asking questions. On the contrary, we would love to answer any questions you might have about our stores.

Set a Generous Time Limit

Although you could certainly spend all day going through every single item on the racks, setting a time limit will help keep you focused and keep you from getting lost. You want this time limit to be long enough that you can find what you’re looking for, but not so long that you spend all day meandering around and not finding what you need.

When you’re ready to get started on your thrifting career, 2nd Avenue wants to be your first stop. Come check out our thrift shop in Pennsauken, NJ, for great deals on incredible items that you won’t find anywhere else.
